With the assistance of Senator Tom Harkin, the City of Knoxville recently received a document regarding the potential use of the VA Campus in Knoxville. In 2009, the VA engaged an outside firm with the purpose of conducting a feasibility study for potential uses of the VA campus. Knoxville City Manager Harold Stewart tells KNIA KRLS News that the document contains three suggestions for the campus – to take no action; demolish the site or, enter into an Enhanced-Use Lease with a third party. The enhanced use lease is the option the VA chose, which the report indicated was the most risky of the three alternatives. Stewart says city staff is reviewing the information to assess how to best move forward with the VA property.
