The Simpson Storm Softball Team could not overcome the barrier called the St. Catherine Wildcats in the NCAA tournament during regional play hosted by Luther College, as the Storm would fall in the double elimination format Saturday for the second time to the Wildcats 8-3.
The Storm lost a heartbreaker in the opening game to the Wildcats 1-0, but would fight to keep their season alive with a 5-0 dominating victory over UW-Superior yesterday setting up the rematch. The Storm would take a brief lead off of a solo home run by Abbie VanderVeer, but the Wildcats would answer right back and tie it with their own solo shot. The game would remain tied until the fifth inning when disaster struck for the Storm, as the Wildcats would take advantage of three walks and a hit batter to score five runs all with two outs punctuated by a two run double by catcher Sammie Galves. The Storm would cut the deficit to three at one point, but a pair of runs scored in the seventh doomed the Storm and ended their season. The Storm reached the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, and ended with a 31-12 record.
