Authorities have identified the man who drowned at Lake Red Rock Friday.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says an investigation shows that a seven year old female was playing at the water’s edge with other members of her party and inadvertently ventured into deeper areas of the Des Moines River at approximately 2:55 p.m. The 911 caller advised the girl was pulled out by a nearby boater, but was unconscious and not breathing. After pulling several other subjects to safety, the boater was able to resuscitate the girl by performing CPR. She has since been transported to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines for observation and is listed in stable condition.

Her uncle, Cha Charles Lee, 42, of St. Paul, MN also attempted to provide assistance to the girl but succumbed to the deeper waters. Search efforts for Lee were successful and his body was located approximately 20 yards away by the Pleasantville Dive Team two hours later.

Sheriff Jason Sandholdt says, “Although this event ended tragically, I applaud the heroic efforts of the nearby boater. He saved additional family member’s lives today by being in the area and providing assistance.” When Sheriff Sandholdt spoke to the boater, who at this point wanted to remain anonymous out of respect to the family’s loss, he was “very humble” about his actions, but stressed the importance of being trained in CPR.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pella Fire, Knoxville Fire and Rescue, Pella Ambulance, Pleasantville Rescue, the Pella Police Department and Marion County Emergency Management responded.
