Officers with the Pella Police Department will soon be hitting the streets in a new patrol car. The department recently added a new 2010 Malibu to the force, similar to other patrol cars currently being driven.

Lieutenant John VanHaaften says the latest vehicle does have some notable upgrades, including all new electronics, a front-mounted digital video camera with full color monitor, a new LED light bar on top and the new narrowband radio upgrade.

Officers put roughly 30,000 to 50,000 miles on a patrol car annually, and a new car is purchased nearly every year as the older ones are retired. When discussing the role of the department’s patrol cars, Lieutenant VanHaaften added, “It’s a tool for us, and we use it a lot.”
