Golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field teams for Newton are competing today, but there’s only one home event.

The Newton girls soccer team will play their third straight game at home tonight, hosting Albia. The Cardinals are 2-4, and coming off a 1-0 loss to Indianola Tuesday. It was the third time in six games that the Newton girls failed to score. They have seven goals so far this season, and have given up 17. The Cardinals girl soccer game against 2-3 Albia begins at 7:15 p.m.

The Newton girls golf team is part of an eleven team field scheduled to play at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. The Cardinals were in Grimes Tuesday for the first half of the Little Hawkeye Conference Golf Meet. The team shot a 405 at Beaver Creek Golf Course in Grimes, placing them fourth. Johana Cerna and Eva Pak both produced the 12th best score of the meet, as each shot 97 to pace Newton. They were the only Cardinals in the top 20. Today’s Toni Dickey Invite starts at 9 a.m.

The Newton boys tennis team travels to Waverly-Shell Rock after Tuesday’s home sweep over Oskaloosa. The Cardinals won all eleven matches in two sets to improve to 2-2. Today’s meet in Waverly starts at 3 p.m.

The Newton boys track and field team will take on athletes from 14 other schools at the Saydel Boys Track Invitational. This will be the tenth event Cardinal boys track and field athletes have participated in this season. Earlier this month, they won the South Tama Coed Early Bird Invitational and the Oskaloosa Relays. Today’s meet in Saydel starts at 4:30 p.m.

The Newton girls track and field team will be in LeGrand as part of the 12 team East Marshall Girls Invite. At Tuesday’s Jim Duea Relays in Ames, the Cardinals did not win an event, but produced ten top ten finishes. Three of them were by Tori White in the high jump, 100 meter hurdles, and 400 meter hurdles. The meet today begins at 4:30 p.m.
