Newton Girls Soccer Team Scores Most Goals This Season In Win Over Albia

The Newton girls soccer team had their highest scoring game of the season Thursday, getting their third win of the year in a 5-0 victory over Albia. The Cardinals’ first goal was scored by Riley Plowman, coming off an assist by Sophia Coady in the game’s 11th minute. Aliviah Ross then took over the scoring, recording a hat-trick by putting Newton’s next three goals into the back of the net. The first two goals came in the 13th and 23rd minutes, while the third goal came in the 49th minute. The Cardinals fifth goal came off the foot of Christelle LaHart in the 74th minute.

The 3-4 Newton girls soccer team will be at home again Saturday for an 8:30 a.m. game against Benton.

Newton Girls Track Team Wins East Marshall Invite

The Newton girls track and field team took first place at the East Marshall Girls Invite on Thursday. The Cardinals accumulated 159 points in the meet, while second place Roland-Story had 90 points. First place finishes for Newton included the 4×400 meter relay team (4:15:30), the sprint medley relay team (1:57.20), the shuttle hurdle relay team (1:08.58), Alexis Sorenson in the 1500 meter run (5:21.39), and Tori White in the 100 meter hurdles (16.12). Placing second for Newton on the night were Lauren Clarke in the 100 meter dash (13.26), Lola Rivera in the 200 meter dash, the 4×100 meter relay team (51.05), the 4×200 meter relay team (1:47.94), Harper Barton in the 800 meter run (2:33.89), and Alexis Sorenson in the 3000 meter run (11:30.10). Third place finishes were turned in by the Cardinals 4×800 meter relay team (10:52.18), Mack Sims in the 400 meter hurdles (1:14,56), Audrey Muckler in the 3000 meter run (11:38.01), Tori White in the high jump (5’-00”), and Brooke Garvis in the shot put (32”-09.75”).

Newton Boys Track And Field Finish Third At Saydel Invitational

The Newton boys track and field team earned a third place finish at the Saydel High School Boys Invitational on Thursday. The Cardinals won two events and had 19 top 10 finishes as several athletes achieved personal records. The 4×200 meter relay team of Nick Thomason, Reilly Trease, Christian Ergenbright, and Caden Klein won in a season best time of 1:28.27, and that mark met the Drake Relays Blue Standard and gave the squad the fastest time in the state so far this season. Nick Milburn added an event victory in the shot put with a personal record of 55’ 05”. Isaiah Hansen placed second in the high jump by clearing 5’ 10”. Ali Yahia finished third in the 200 meter dash (23.45) and fourth in the 400 meter dash (53.09), and both of his times were personal records. Lance Zaabel was fourth in the 3200 meter run in a season best time of 10:26.06, while Cade Bauer was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a personal record time of 59.28. Fifth place finishes were turned in by Austin Arauz with a personal best in the 110 meter hurdles (16.22), Mason Mendez with a personal record in the 400 meter hurdles (59.85), and the sprint medley relay team (1:41.05).

Newton Boys Tennis Team Swept At Waverly-Shell Rock

The Newton boys tennis team failed to win a match in Waverly Thursday, falling to Waverly-Shell Rock 9-0. Ethan Valtman lost his first singles match of the season, falling in two sets, 6-2 and 6-3. The only Newton player to force a three set tiebreaker was Evan Marshall, who lost that third set 10-8. 

The Cardinals boys tennis team is now 2-3, and will host Boone at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
