The Norwalk Warriors had four spring sports teams competing on Tuesday, highlighted by exciting dual wins for the tennis teams over Indianola.

Girls Tennis wins 6-5

On Senior Night in Norwalk, the Warrior girls tennis team outlasted Indianola 6-5, improving to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Norwalk picked up singles wins from Ivanna Sherstiuk, Leah Black and Kierdyn Stockwell. Winning in doubles were Julia Palen with Stockwell, Jacey Crane with Myla Brown, and Elena Harder with Anna Curran. Competing at No. 5 doubles, Harder and Curran won a third-set tiebreaker 10-4 to clinch the dual victory. 

The Warriors had lost two previous duals by 6-5 decisions. They will play another conference dual at Oskaloosa on Thursday.

Boys Tennis wins 6-5

The Norwalk boys tennis team also defeated Indianola by a 6-5 final score, improving to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the Little Hawkeye. The Warriors’ No. 4 doubles team of Wyatt Coburn and Isaac Lors won a third-set tiebreaker (11-9) to clinch the dual win. Drew Lents and Corbin Oswald won singles matches for Norwalk and also teamed up to win in doubles. The doubles teams of Lane Juergens with Eli Mills and Ben Swim with Carson Menke earned victories as well. Norwalk will host Oskaloosa on Thursday.

Boys Track 2nd at Carlisle

The Norwalk boys track and field team won five events and scored 130 points to place second at the Carlisle Invite. Warrior gold medals were earned by Kaiden Kunze in the 200-meter dash, Daniel Roche in the 400 hurdles, Tony Anania in the 1,600 and Logan Atherton in the long jump, as well as the 4×100 relay team of Tebelle Brooks, Kadan Borcherding-Johnson, Eli Robbins and Jamison Giesemann. Kunze broke his own school record in the 200, finishing in 21.76 seconds. Roche clocked a school-record time of 54.53 in the 400 hurdles.

Kunze also placed second in the high jump while AJ Mosqueda took second in the 800 with a personal-best of 1:58.34. Sam Parker placed third in the 3,200 with a ‘PR’ of 9:56.17 and Robbins took third in the 400 dash with a ‘PR’ of 52.79. The Warriors will compete at Waukee Northwest on Thursday.

Girls Golf 3rd at Ames

The Norwalk girls golfers placed third out of 14 teams at the Turk Bowman Invite, played on the challenging Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames. The top-ranked Little Cyclones won the meet with a 350, No. 3 Marshalltown placed second with a 368 and No. 8 Norwalk was third with a 383. Lydia Krueger and Evelyn Kinney paced the Warriors with rounds of 93, tying for 11th place. Addie Smith shot a 98 and Ava Garvey added a 99. Norwalk’s next meet will be Monday’s Johnston Invite at Jester Park.
