
Newton Boys And Girls Golf Finish Little Hawkeye Conference Meets With One Championship
Newton Sophomore Jackson Price shot a three under par 68 Monday in the fourth and final Little Hawkeye Conference Meet at Westwood Golf Course to claim the 2025 Individual Little Hawkeye Conference Championship by three strokes, while the team finished fourth. Peyton Rozendaal shot a 76 Monday and finished the conference tournament in 23rd place. Ethan Pageler shot an 87 to claim 25th, Mason Smith was 28th with a final round of 90, Lincoln Peterson ended with an 86 for 29th, and Carter Forst shot a 96 for 30th.
The Newton girls golf team finished fourth in the Little Hawkeye Conference following Monday’s third league meet at Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa. The Cardinal girls posted a score of 360 yesterday, finishing 20 strokes behind the conference champions from Norwalk. Johana Cerna placed 11th in the conference and Addie Ratcliff was 13th for Newton. Eva Pak also made the top twenty, placing 17th. The girls scores from Oskaloosa Monday included an 85 for Ratcliff, an 88 from Evie Main, a 93 from Cerna, a 94 for Addison Hook, and 104’s from Pak and Kalleigh Berndt.
The Newton girls golf team’s next competition is Friday at the Fort Dodge Girls Invitational, while the boys team will be at the class 3A sectional qualifier Wednesday at Knoxville.
Newton Girls Tennis Play In Class 1A Individual Regionals In Pella
The Newton girls tennis team traveled to Pella Monday to compete in the Class 1A Regional Individual State Qualifying meet
In singles play, Alexis Dirksen won her first match 7-6, 7-5; but fell in the quarterfinals to the #1 seed and eventual singles champion from Pella 6-1, 6-0. Paige Benson also picked up a first round win for Newton with 6-3, 6-1 decision, but suffered a quarterfinal loss to the singles champion runner-up and number two seed from Pella.
In the doubles bracket, Emersyn Gross and Brooklyn Sterling picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win in their first match to play their way into the bracket, then defeated their first round opponents 6-0, 6-0 before dropping their third match in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-3.
Newton’s other doubles team of Sloan Brodersen and Morgan Frehse picked up a three set first round win 6-4, 5-7, 1-0; before falling in the quarterfinals 6-7, 6-0, 0-1.
The Newton girls tennis team will travel to North Polk Friday to compete in the Class 1A Regional Team Qualifying Tournament.
Newton Boys And Girls Track Compete In Pella
The Newton boys and girls track and field teams were part of the seven team Dutch Co-ed Relays in Pella Monday. No team scores were kept at the meet. Zach Felton turned in the only first place finish for the boys in the discus(147-05”). The Cardinal boys added three third place finishes with Cade Bauer in the high jump (6’-00”), Colter Shaw in the 100m dash (12.01), and the shuttle hurdle relay (1:03.02).
The Cardinal girls had thirteen top three finishes, including four event wins. Macy Lampe won the 100m hurdles (16.26) and Tori White was second (16.44). White won the high jump (5’-00”) and Abby Bruce was second in the long jump (15’-08.25”). Lola Rivera was third in the 100m dash (13.14), MaKarra Budinich was third in the 400m hurdles (1:29.05), and Audrey Muckler was third in the 1500m run (5:17.61). In relays, the Newton girls were first in the 4x800m (10:06.09) and the shuttle hurdle relay (1:07.66), second in the 4x100m (51.69) and the 4x400m relays (4:38.46), and the sprint medley relay, (1:54.52) and the distance medley relay (4:46.70) took third.
The Newton boys and girls track and field teams will compete again Thursday in the Class 3A State Qualifying Meet at Mount Vernon.
