
The Newton boys track and field team claimed a District title in Mount Vernon with fourteen State qualifiers Thursday, while the Newton girls will compete in four events at State after finishing third.
The Cardinal boys amassed 178 points, while host Mount Vernon was second with 102. Caden Klein (11.15) and Nick Thomason (11.28) are headed to State in the 100m dash after finishing first and second. Klein (22.09) and Christian Ergenbright (22.43) both beat the previous stadium record and finished first and second in the 200m dash, while Reilly Trease (15.14) and Austin Arauz (15.55) took the top two spots in the 110m hurdles. Arauz’s time was a personal record. Klein also won the 400m hurdles (54.20). Other Newton boys who qualified with second place finishes were Lance Zaabel in the 3200m run (10:20:51), Alameen Shanto with a personal record in the long jump (21’-6.75”), and Nick Milburn in the shot put (54’-11,25”).
One of the four Newton relay teams headed to the State Meet off wins Thursday includes the defending State Champion 800m sprint medley relay team of Nick Thomason, Trease, Ergenbright, and Klein. They turned in a season best time (1:32.00). The 4×100 relay team of Thomason, Trease, Ali Yahai, and Ergenbright also produced a season best time (42.69). The 4x200m relay team of Thomason, Trease, Yahai, and Ergenbright set a stadium record in their win (1:28.68). The other relay victory was turned in by Josh Lampe, Drew and Cade Bauer, and Arauz in the 440m shuttle hurdle relay (1:01.58).
The Cardinal girls track and field team accumulated 116 points while Mount Vernon took the title with 167. Newton will be sending Tori White to the State Meet in the 100m hurdles. She won the event with a personal record time (15.68.) Three girls relay teams are also headed to State. Camryn Klein, Macy Lampe, Mack Sims, and White won the 400m shuttle hurdle relay in a stadium record time (1:05.78). The 4×200 relay team of Klein, Lola Rivera, Abby Bruce, and Lauren Clarke produced a season best time (1:45.03) and placed first. Advancing with a second place finish and season best time (10:01.50) in the girls 4x800m relay are Harper Barton, Sarah Malow, Alex Riney, and Bella Winther.
The Iowa State Track and Field Championships will be held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines May 22nd-24th.
