It’s been nearly a year since the Memorial Day opening of the third veterans section at the City of Newton’s Union Cemetery. Since then, Newton’s Assistant Superintendent of Parks Operations Jamie Murphy says there have been a few burials, while plans for a monument are still being formulated.
“I think we have done four or five burials out there. Up by the flag pole, the vets groups are starting to figure out what they are going to do about a monument there.”
The last burial in Newton Union Cemetery’s veterans section two was back in September, so the burials in section three have taken place since then. The City of Newton says there are 470 fullsize burial plots available in section three, and 317 cremation plots. Those spots are expected to serve the city’s needs for the next 55-to-60 years.
