Most city and county employees will have Monday off because of Memorial Day. Some notable exceptions include city police officers and county deputies, firefighters and EMT’s, emergency dispatchers, and county jail staff. 

All Jasper County Offices will be closed Monday, as will all Newton city offices along with the Public Library and the Sanitary Landfill. City offices in other Jasper County Communities, such as Baxter, Colfax, Kellogg, Monroe, and Prairie City, will also be closed. 

In Newton, American Legion Post 111 will hold an open to the public Memorial Day Ceremony at Union Cemetery. The guest speaker for the 10 a.m. event will be retired United States Marine Corp First Sergeant Ryan Lincoln, who served 21 years in the Marine Corp.
