The Pella Christian baseball team hosted Carlisle in their home opener Friday night, but fell 10-0 in five innings.
After a scoreless first inning, the Wildcats’ offense found the scoreboard with a run in the second inning, before adding four runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 9-0 lead. Carlisle finished the scoring with another run in the top of the fifth, and the Eagles weren’t able to scratch a run across the plate in the bottom of the frame to extend the game. Pella Christian was led offensively on the night by Brecken Ritzert, Grant Kelderman, and Josiah Vink, who all recorded singles in the loss, while Connor VanZee and Finn Spronk added walks to reach base safely. VanZee got the start on the mound and took the loss, pitching the first two innings and allowing just one run on two hits and a walk while striking out two. Ritzert and Spronk combined to pitch the last three innings for the Eagles. Ritzert recorded two strikeouts while allowing four earned runs on five hits and five walks in two innings of work, while Spronk struck out one and gave up just one unearned run on one hit.
The Pella Christian baseball team fell to 0-2 overall with the loss, and is now off until Wednesday when they travel to Dallas Center-Grimes for a doubleheader at 5 pm.
