The Newton baseball team has started the season 0-2 after losses to Saydel and Bondurant-Farrar at home. Assistant coach Colton Major is the acting head coach, while new head coach Darin Tisdale is temporarily away from the team. Major believes this young, inexperienced squad with not a lot of past success has handled some early adversity pretty well.

“We’ve had to battle through a lot of adversity in this first month of the year. We lost both of our first games by a combined total of three runs between the two. That is to be taken away from this first week though. It was two very close games where we had the lead and lost it late.”

The Cardinals lost last week to Saydel 5-3 and Bondurant-Farrar 8-7. Major says the team is doing a lot of learning at the start of this season with a new coaching staff and some new philosophies. He adds shifting the mindset to get the players to believe they can win is a priority for the coaching staff, and he believes they will get there.

The Newton baseball team will play a doubleheader at Norwalk Wednesday.
