The Newton baseball team built a six run lead over the first three innings of their non-conference match-up with Knoxville on Monday, but couldn’t sustain that momentum in a 12-6 road loss. Cade Bauer, who went 2 for 4, and Kreytein Wickliffe had the only two runs batted in for the Cardinals, while Gabe Otto went 2 for 3. Newton’s runs were scored on six hits, four walks, two hit batters, and three Knoxville errors. After getting five runs in the bottom of the third inning to trail the Cardinals 6-5, the Panthers scored their next seven runs over the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to get the comeback win. Knoxville finished the contest offensively with twelve hits, seven walks, and one hit batter.
Newton is now 4-14 on the season and they return to Little Hawkeye Conference play tonight at Pella. Tonight’s game can be heard live on the KRLS3 Stream, with pregame coverage at 6:45 p.m.
