The City of Newton is donating $50,000 to Des Moines Area Community College in support of a State of Iowa Community Attraction and Tourism Grant application for the Legacy Plaza Greenspace. DMACC President Rob Denson says a donated, $600,000 sculpture and other amenities are to be added to this downtown gathering space.
“The Greenspace itself is a $2.9 million project. The sculpture the Vernon Family is putting up, and a very nice pavilion where we will put the ice skating rink in the winter and it will be available for all kinds of events and performances. The whole Greenspace is going to be a beautiful area to bring the community together.”
Denson, who’s retiring as DMACC President at the end of the year, says the college has taken in just under $2 million in donations and just over $260,000 in grants for the Legacy Plaza Greenspace. The Iowa Community Attraction and Tourism Grant that’s being sought is for $580,000.
