Iowa Senator Joni Ernst visited Indianola on Saturday, touring Honey Hollow Apiary and Gardens, a two-time Choose Iowa grant recipient. Ernst said during conversations of the visit, the topic of State of Iowa regulations regarding the sale of bees and an added sales tax that is not given an exemption to other livestock such as pigs or cattle.
“Definitely talking to Iowa Legislators. So, Jason and Shannon (Owners of Honey Hollow Apiary and Gardens) outlined efforts that have happened in the Iowa House and the Iowa Senate to do away with the sales tax that comes with selling bees. We are one of the only states that has a sales tax, as they are considered livestock in many of the regulations. So we need to address that, if I can work and try and convince some of our state legislators to really push on that bill that would be pretty extraordinary.”
