A Newton man is to be sentenced on felony and aggravated misdemeanor charges after admitting that he accidentally fired a gun in his apartment back in May. Newton Police say 34-year-old Darius Deshay Washington confessed to having possession of a 20 gauge shotgun when it fired one shot into an occupied next door apartment. No injuries were reported. The incident happened May 23rd, at an apartment building at 1111 North 11th Avenue East. Washington has pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm as a Felon, a class D felony, and reckless use of a firearm causing property damage. Court documents show he has a prior felony conviction for a controlled substance violation in December of 2010. Washington is currently free on a $1,000 bond, awaiting a September 8th sentencing hearing on his new charges.
