
The #7 sports moment on our top 10 countdown from Newton High School during the 2024-2025 school year came during the Cardinals boys basketball team’s first round substate game at home against Boone on February 24th.
Senior Cade Bauer led Newton to a dominant 97-54 victory over the Toreadors, scoring 28 points and setting a school record for made 3-point shots. The senior attempted 12 three pointers on the night, knocking down eight of them, besting the previous mark of seven threes in a single game. Overall, Bauer made 9-16 shots from the floor, and was 2-2 at the free throw line. Following the victory, Cade said the team was playing with a sense of urgency, and several players contributed offensively.
“Any game right now could be our last one, so we have to go out and play like it is because it very well could be. Again, we were able to knock some three’s down and a lot of guys stepped up tonight, which I am very grateful for.”
Helping Bauer push the Cardinals into the second round of the Class 3A Substate 7 bracket, where Landon Bozarth and Isaiah Slaughter, who each contributed 16 points and two made threes. Caden Klein also reached double figures, scoring ten points and also knocking down a pair of triples.
Newton ended the season with a 12-11 overall record and a 4-7 mark in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
