Newton residents who want to run for Mayor, City Council, or the school board can begin filing their paperwork for the November 4th election this coming Monday, August 25th. All elections within Jasper County are managed by the Jasper County Auditor’s Office. Candidacy papers must be filed with the Newton City Clerk at City Hall or the Newton School Board Secretary at the EJH Beard Administration Building by 5:00 p.m. Thursday, September 18th. These papers can be obtained at those offices or at the Jasper County Auditors’ Office on the second floor of the Jasper County Courthouse in Newton. Questions about running for office, absentee ballots, or voting locations can be answered by the Jasper County Auditor’s Office at 641-792-7016, or found on the Jasper County Elections website here.

Newton Mayor Evelyn George has served one term, and has announced she is not seeking re-election. Also up for election this year are the Newton City Council seats of Second Ward Representative Melissa Dalton, Fourth Ward Council Member Steve Mullan, and At-Large Council Member Randy Ervin. 

On the Newton School Board, seats that are up for election in November are currently held by School Board President Robyn Friedman, Cody Muhs, Travis Padget, and Ray Whipple.
