With a #3 preseason ranking and a large returning group of key players, the Pella volleyball team isn’t shying away from the expectations that come with finishing 2nd in the state.
The Dutch open their season Thursday at the Mount Vernon tournament, and the early season slate through mid-September will feature many of the state tournament contenders in both Class 4A volleyball and those from around the state.
Head Coach Joel Allman says it won’t take long for his team to experience the level of competition necessary to compete for a state championship, and he’s hopeful that regardless of the end result, the tough early season slate will set the stage for a deep October run.
While keyed by a large group of seniors, led by 4A Volleyball Player of the Year Katie Scheckel, a lot will ride on a freshman setter, as Julia Settles works to facilitate the offense. Allman has been excited about her skill and how it meshes with a veteran team of largely seniors surrounding her.
