Central College professor of Spanish Kathy Korcheck recently published an article, “Contemporary Graphic Travelogues in U.S. Spanish Classrooms: A New Itinerary for Teaching Spain,” in Hispania.

Korcheck’s article presents her experience teaching with Spanish graphic travelogues, real-life travel stories, written and illustrated by women about their journeys to places like Asia, Africa and the Americas. Korcheck argues that these comics are valuable teaching tools because they help students think more deeply about language, national identity, global relations, and responsible tourism. By combining images and text, these graphic novels offer new ways for students to understand an increasingly visual world.

Hispania is published by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and is devoted to the teaching of Spanish and Portuguese. Hispania publishes scholarly articles that are judged to be of interest to specialists in the discipline(s) as well as to a diverse readership of teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
