The Newton boys and girls cross-country teams, the Newton Volleyball team, and the Newton Aquagirls all competed on Thursday.

The Newton Boys cross-country team was 21st among 27 teams while the Cardinal girls  placed 22nd out of 25 teams in the Fort Dodge Cross-Country Invite at Lakeside Golf Course. Cooper Christy was the first Newton boy to cross the finish line, placing 69th (17:04.5). Lance Zaabel and Levi Zaabel were 94th (17:33.8) and 159th (19:15.8). Drew Lamont and David Wickett rounded out the Cardinals top five finishers in 164th (19:27.1) and 168th (19:33.3), Alexis Sorensen turned in the best time for the Newton girls, finishing 62nd (20:17.6). Talia Friedman placed 110th (21:34.4), Alivia Kingery 129th (22.22.4), and Sarah Malow finished 146th (22:59.6).  Audrey Muckler placed 160th (23:52.1). On Tuesday, the Newton boys and girls cross-country teams will participate in the Little Hawkeye Conference Meet at Pickard Park in Indianola. 

The Newton Volleyball team lost their first match but won their second at the Des Moines North Triangular. Both matches lasted two sets. The Cardinals fell to Williamsburg 25-14, 25-23. In that match, Morgan Frehse had 5.5 kills, Cameryn Klein eight digs and 4.5 kills, Isabelle Rawlins 10.5 assists, and Sophie Greer seven digs. In their second match, Newton defeated Des Moines North 25-12, 25-16. Frehse served three aces and had nine kills while Rawlins added 11.5 assists and six digs. The Cardinal volleyball team is now 10-12, and will host Dallas Center-Grimes on Tuesday. 

The Newton Colfax-Mingo Pella Aquagirls took second place in a four-team meet at Trail Point Aquatics and Wellness in Ankeny. Team results provided by host school Ankeny has the Hawks with 648 points, the Aquagirls 496, Roosevelt 424, and Indianola 320. Aqua girl coach Kaylee Franke says a printer malfunction prevented all the individual event results from being released Thursday night. The next meet for the Aquagirls will be at home on Tuesday with Boone and Carroll.
