A group that supports the Red Rock Prairie Trail that currently exists between Prairie City and Monroe is asking for help to plant more trees. The non-profit group Friends of the Red Rock Prairie Trail says volunteers have planted over 1,300 trees along the trail the past two years, and they want to keep adding to that number. Their goal is 7,000 trees, which they believe will provide a good trail environment. A $5.00 donation gets one tree for the trail. Donations can be given online (https://www.zeffy.com/…/donati…/help-us-plant-more-trees), mailed to Friends of Red Rock Prairie Trail, or drop pop cans off at Monroe Redemption Center and mention they are for Red Rock Prairie Trail. Volunteers are also needed to plant trees. Friends of the Red Rock Prairie Trail have scheduled tree planting dates on November 15, 16, 22, and 23. The Red Rock Prairie Trail from Monroe to Prairie City was completed in August 2022. Additional funding is needed for the segment connecting Prairie City to Mitchellville. The long range goal is for this trail to be part of a connection from Saylorville Lake north of Des Moines, to Lake Red Rock and the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge.
