The Newton boys and girls basketball teams play their fifth straight road game tonight, traveling to Class 2A Albia to take on the 3-5 Blue Demons and the 6-4 Lady Dees.
The Cardinal boys hope to end a losing streak that’s reached three-games. In the losses to Pella Christian, Oskaloosa, and Norwalk, Newton averaged 42 points per game while the three other teams averaged 59 points. Head coach Jason Carter got Qhjuan Coley and Reagan Maki into Tuesday’s game at Norwalk, as he searches for more offensive productivity.
“People are always moving in and out. We just have to find the right mix so we can put points on the board.”
The Cardinal girls have won three of their last four games, and trailed 10-1 Norwalk by just 12 points heading into the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s game at Norwalk before falling to the Warriors. Head coach Jake Bennett wants to see the effort the team gave in that game, repeated in every game the rest of the season.
“We need that team to come in and play all the teams we have circled on our schedule that we want to go get. And maybe if that team comes out, we may be able to sneak a few games here or there.”
The 6-5 Newton girls and the 3-7 Cardinal boys games at Albia can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS and the KRLS3 stream, with pregame coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m.
