The removal of 47 damaged trees from Newton’s Union Cemetery and Maytag and Woodland Parks has been completed, with no additional charges beyond the contracted price. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says the project began last August with the issuance of two tree removal contracts to Top Saw Tree Service of Kalona and DW Tree Service in Newton. The two contracts combined totaled $33,100. Muckler notes Top Saw Tree Service took out the 22 damaged trees at Maytag Park, while DW Tree Service took care of the 25 trees at Union Cemetery and Woodland Park. The damaged trees were from the 2020 derecho, the 2022 tornado, and natural tree loss from the past several years.
