The City of Newton is scheduled to flush fire hydrants this Friday and Saturday. Hydrants north of 1st Avenue will be flushed on Friday, while. hydrants south of 1st Avenue will be flushed on Saturday. Only hydrants with the highest flow and those at dead ends will be flushed.
Newton Public Works Director Joe Grife says flushing clears water mains of sediment and mineral deposits that build up over time. Water service will not be interrupted, but Grife notes some customers may notice a temporary drop in water pressure or slight discoloration. When there is discoloration, run the cold-water tap until it clears and avoid using hot water or doing laundry until the water is clear.
