Almost 100 additional rental units were added to the City of Newton in Fiscal Year 2025. Bethany Hovda is the Rental Inspection Program Administrator in Newton, and says that the city went from 2,274 units in 716 rental properties in 2024 to 2,370 units in 728 properties last year. The increase was from nine new duplexes, an additional complex with over 50 units, an additional 4 to 8 unit complex, and two more rental homes. Hovda notes most of the growth in rental units has occurred on the east side of Newton.
“The total number of rental property owners is 267, and that kind of stays right around there. It’s still very heavily dominated in the northeast and the southeast is where a vast majority of our rentals are found.”
Out of Newton’s 2,370 rental units, 836 are in the southeast quadrant of town, 652 are in the northeast, 473 in the northwest, and 409 in the southwest. Hovda adds that a 3-story, 44-unit senior living apartment building is currently under construction in southwest Newton, at 1500 West 7th Street South.
