The Indianola City Council has begun their Ride Safe ‘n Smart Safety Campaign discussions. This is an attempt to better educate citizens on the usage of electric motor vehicles such as scooters, bikes and others. Indianola City Manager Jake Meshke says they have discussed this issue with other communities across the state.

“We’re seeing a push across the metro with some communities bonding together to collaboratively release information to educate on these materials. We’re also seeing some of the other metro communities look at some ordinance revisions on how they regulate some of those with real orientation on safety. We do have some records in the books already in Indianola that guide some of those things. As those ordinances are coming out across from our peers communities around the metro, we’ll continually be reviewing our ordinances to see if there’s any updates or improvements we can make to provide safe experiences for all using our different modes of transportation and our different trails.”

There’s still plenty of learning to be done with this issue, including speed of electric motor vehicles and whether they belong on sidewalks or streets. For the full interview, tune in to today’s Let’s Talk Indianola.
