The Norwalk City Council has approved an agreement aimed at improving pedestrian safety around Oviatt Elementary School, advancing a project that targets sidewalk gaps near the campus.

As part of the April 16 meeting, council members unanimously approved a federal-aid agreement for a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) project to complete missing sidewalk connections in the area. The effort is designed to create safer, more consistent walking routes for students and families traveling to and from the school.

While the item did not receive separate discussion during the meeting, the project reflects a broader push by the city to invest in walkability and infrastructure that supports continued residential growth, particularly in areas with younger populations and increasing school traffic. City officials have also noted that incomplete pedestrian networks often force students and residents onto streets or onto inconsistent paths. By closing the gaps near Oviatt Elementary, the city aims to reduce potential safety risks while improving accessibility for the surrounding neighborhood.

The agreement allows the city to move forward with planning and funding coordination for the project, which is partially supported through federal transportation dollars.
