k-9-training

The return of a K-9 officer to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department is getting closer. Jasper County Sheriff Brad Shutts says Deputy Wyatt Dillon and K-9 Tex are nearing the end of their 12 week training at Performance Kennels Inc. where they have trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and apprehension. Tex is from Slovakia. Shutts says he was picked up from the trainer in Minneapolis on June 24th of last year, and has spent time getting to know Deputy Dillon and working on basic skills before the two of them headed back to Buffalo, Minnesota for their formal training.

“A training program from west of Minneapolis. He’s a retired law enforcement K-9 officer from the Minneapolis Metro area. He’s been doing it for many years. He goes over and picks out the dogs in Slovakia and they are shipped over here.”

K9 Tex joined the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of a USPCA/AKC Reunite K9 grant and some generous donations from the Jasper County community. Jasper County Sheriff Brad Shutts talks more about the department’s new K-9 on today’s Let’s Talk Newton.
