A Newton man who is a robbery suspect surrendered to police Monday morning after a standoff with officers that was ended by members of Newton’s SWAT Team. Newton Police Lt. Wayne Winchell says 57-year-old Brent William Deppe is facing a class C felony charge of 2nd degree robbery, a class D felony charge of interference with officials acts with a weapon, and an aggravated misdemeanor charge of 1st degree harassment. Deppe was treated for minor injuries in the emergency room of Newton MercyOne Medical Center, and is now being held in the Jasper County Jail.

On Sunday, May 17, Lt. Winchell says Newton Police took a report of an assault that had occurred at a residence in the 900-block of East 15th Street North. The victim reported that a man threatened to kill him, and stole his wallet after punching him multiple times and knocking him to the ground. Officers attempted to make contact with Deppe, the suspect, at his residence at approximately 9:30 Monday morning. He reportedly threatened officers through the door, and then appeared with a sword before retreating back into his home. Winchell says the Newton Swat team was called when all attempts to negotiate with Deppe were unsuccessful. The SWAT Team members then unsuccessfully attempted to get Deppe to surrender. Then, after multiple warnings, less-lethal gas was discharged into the home, prompting Deppe to surrender within a few minutes.
