
Four Newton High School teams will be playing today, and two of them will be attempting to extend their seasons.
Newton Boys Golf Competes In 3A State Qualifier At Bos Landen Golf Course
The Newton boys golf team will attempt to advance to the state tournament through the Class 3A District Qualifying Meet at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella. The Cardinals will compete against nine other teams. The top four golfers for Newton and their 18-hole averages are Jackson Price-79.7, Mason Smith-81.9, Kellan Hartgers-84.5, and Grant Osby-85.7.
Today’s Boys Golf District Qualifying meet at Bos Landen Golf Course, which was postponed from Monday, begins at Noon.
Newton Boys Soccer Plays First Round District Match Against Winterset
The Newton boys soccer team will attempt to keep their season going by getting a win in a First Round Class 3A District Match against Winterset at Earlham High School. The Cardinals are 2-13-2 and have scored 20 goals out of 103 shots on goal. Teams playing Newton have 54 goals out of 203 shots. The Huskies are 5-11 with 26 goals out of 111 shots. Winterset’s senior goalie has given up 48 goals and stopped 105 shots.
The Class 3A first round match between the Cardinals and Huskies begins at 7 p.m.
Newton Girls Soccer Hosts Clarke
The Newton girls soccer team hosts Clarke tonight. The Cardinals are 5-8-1 while Clarke is 1-6-4. Newton has been off for a week, since losing to Pella in Pella 6-1 last Tuesday. The Cardinals have scored 24 goals this season while giving up 43. The Indians have played three fewer games than Newton, and have scored 5 goals while giving up 17.
The girls’ soccer game between the Cardinals and Clarke at H.A. Lynn Stadium begins at 7 p.m.
Newton Boys Baseball Opens The Season At Home Against Grinnell
The Newton boys baseball team opens the season at home against Grinnell. The Cardinals’ have two returning seniors in pitcher and catcher Lane Rozendaal and infielder and pitcher Gabe Otto. Rozendaal’s batting average was .122 while Otto batted .156. Current junior Mason Mendez, an outfielder and pitcher, had the highest batting average for a non-senior last season at .292. The Tigers come to Newton with a 1-0 record after a 5-3 win at Fairfield.
