A slow start gave way to an offensive onslaught for the Central College women’s soccer team in a 4-0 home win against Illinois College Tuesday, while the short-handed Dutch men’s team fell 3-1 on the road at Division III #3 St. Olaf College (Minn.).
After 40 scoreless minutes to start the women’s contest, Sami Anderson put Central (1-0) on the board in the 41st minute with her first career goal. Central added two more goals in the first three minutes of the second half, when Lila Gwyn and Josie Newton scored within 60 seconds of each other. Newton scored on an assist from Olivia DeVos. Anderson made it a brace in the 84th minute to close out the scoring. Zoey Sizemore faced just four shots, making one save in a shutout performance.
Starting the season without three of their top returning midfielders didn’t stop the Dutch men (0-1) from scoring the game’s opening tally. Isaiah Guyton took a long pass from Anthony Davis and chipped it over the keeper to put the Dutch in front 16 minutes into the contest. The Oles leveled the score at 1-1 just two minutes later after Central conceded an own goal. St. Olaf found the back of the net in the 63rd and 70th minute to give them its final line. The Dutch were outshot 22-8, receiving six saves from goalkeeper Morgan Finkenbinder.
The Dutch women hit the road for a 4:30 pm match at Cornell College Friday in Mount Vernon, while the Central men host Augustana College (Ill.) at 5 pm on Friday.
