Softball Splits with Pella on KRLS
The #15 in Class 5A Indianola softball team hosted #9 in 4A and defending state champions Pella for their first doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, losing the first game 10-6 but winning the second 9-6. The second game was heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Indians looked strong to start the opener, as they led 5-1 going into the sixth inning, recording multiple two-run innings. The Dutch, however, would get bats going late, scoring seven runs with two outs in the sixth inning. They would cap off their comeback with two runs in the seventh, for their first win of the season.
The Indians would continue their early offense in the nightcap, scoring two runs in the first and leading 8-2 through four, largely thanks to two two-run doubles across three hits from Alena Woosley. Pella would once again mount a comeback, scoring four runs in the seventh inning off of back-to-back homers from Katie Scheckel and Lucy Carlson, but would fall short of the Indianola cushion by three runs.
In game two, the Indians recorded ten hits and seven RBIs, four of which came from Woosley. They would also earn two runs off of three Pella errors in the third inning. Alexa Guyer, Ashley Schultz, Kaitlyn Bonnes, and Leah Offenburger each recorded two hits. Ashley Schultz also added four strikeouts on the mound, and Mackenzie Santi earned the save.
Now 1-2, the Indians turn around to compete today as they host #2 in 4A Carlisle for a single game at 7:15 p.m.
Baseball Sweeps the Dutch
The Indianola baseball squad swept Pella at home on Wednesday, 7-2 in game one and 8-7 in game two.
In game one, the Indians received eight strikeouts on five innings pitched from George Blake, who also helped himself in the box with a home run and two RBIs. Indianola also received RBIs from Zach Benge, Brody Merema, and Asher Brueck. Daxton Heimbaugh was credited with the save through two innings of work.
Game two was much more dramatic, with the winning run coming from a straight steal of home plate by Heimbaugh in the seventh, also earning the save in that game, and notching two RBIs. Bo Blake had three RBIs, and George Blake had one.
Now 7-0-1, the Indians will next travel to Oskaloosa on Friday for a single game at 7 p.m.
Boys Soccer Advances to Substate Final
The Indianola boys soccer team defeated Ballard in the 3A substate semifinal on Wednesday. 3-0. They advance to the final on Friday to take on Lewis Central.
The Indians received two goals from Max Martinez and one from Anson Miller. All three goals were assisted by Damien Moyo. Van Kauffman was credited with the shutout.
Friday’s substate final against Lewis Central will begin at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the state tournament next week.
