The Knoxville City Council approved a one year lease extension with the Knoxville Senior Center on Monday, as the future of the center remains uncertain.

The senior center is located in the lower level of the city municipal building and the City and the senior center have had a long standing relationship through annual lease agreements. The future is now unknown for the senior center as the City will be moving all government operations to their new public safety/city hall building off Highway 14, which is currently under construction, and will be completed around this time next year. Also at Monday’s meeting, the council approved authorizing the sale of the building which could result in the senior center having to move locations. City Manager Heather Ussery says the center is looking for potential spots of where they could move after the building is sold.

“The one year term puts it in June of 2027 which we discussed and it puts the timing about the same as when the new public safety/city hall building will be completed so this will probably be the final lease between the City of Knoxville and the senior center for the space in this building. The senior center spoke about some space needs that they are needing and that they would ultimately like to move and find some additional space. They’ve had some trouble in the community finding the needs that they have.”
