The Knoxville City Council heard an update at their meeting Monday on a future sports complex project in Knoxville’s Veterans District.
The project will be on 18 acres of land in the VA District. This current fiscal year, the parks and recreation department budgeted funds to be used for engineering from RDG Planning and Design, which was presented at the meeting Monday. The project will consist of approximately four baseball/softball fields and seven soccer fields. This site is part of plat four in the Veterans District, which was approved in October and the land has now recently been deeded over from the County to the City. The project is expected to cost between $6-$7 Million and Parks and Recreation Director Brandon Nemmers, who presented on the project Monday, is going to establish a committee for the project and launch a capital campaign to fundraise. City Manager Heather Ussery believes this project will make a strong positive economic impact on the community.
“The youth sports you see it all over in other communities but for the city at our level I think it’s the economic impact that brings a lot of families to the community. They are going to be staying in the hotels, shopping in the downtown businesses and our restaurants and overall it’s a large impact. Not only is it providing the amenities to those in the sports world but also it’s an impact community wide so overall I think it will be a great positive impact to the community of Knoxville.”
