Knoxville preschool teacher Erin Clarke has received the annual Leighton State Bank Teacher of the Year award.

Clarke was presented the award in her classroom at West Elementary on Tuesday with staff from Leighton State Bank and Principal Jory Houser. The award provides an opportunity to recognize a teacher in local communities for their commitment and passion for education, and their impact on students. Nominations are open to teachers in Leighton State Bank communities including Knoxville, Pella, Monroe, and Leighton (Oskaloosa).

Leighton State Bank said they received a record number of nominations this year and three of Clarke’s nominations were read to her on Tuesday. Clarke has been teaching for over 20 years and she tells KNIA/KRLS that she is overwhelmed with gratitude.

“I’m overwhelmed. I never would’ve expected this. I have been teaching for 22 years and I really still do love it as much today as I did right when I started. I appreciate everyone that thought to nominate me for this award. I’m just overwhelmed with gratitude and I don’t even have the words to express how I feel.”

Clarke also received $250 for classroom expenses as part of the award.
