The Newton baseball and softball teams lost their home games Friday, with the Cardinal softball team’s loss coming in extra innings.
East Marshall defeated Newton 2-1 in nine innings. The Cardinals scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice by Sloan Broderson, which scored Lexi Frehse. The Cardinals only had two hits in the game, by Brooklyn Britton and Freshe. Newton had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a runner on second and two outs, but East Marshall got out of the inning on a fly out by second base. The Mustangs scored their runs in the second and ninth innings. The winning run was scored with a one-out hit, a sacrifice bunt to get the runner to second, and then another hit. East Marshall had ten hits, including a double. Leileigh Hammons pitched all nine innings for the Cardinals and took the loss. Only one of the two runs she gave up was earned. The Newton softball team is 20-12 and will play at PCM on Monday.
The Newton baseball team dropped a 6-3 game to Winterset. The Huskies scored three runs in the third inning and three runs in the sixth inning. The Cardinals tied the game at three with their final run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Three of the Huskies’ runs were earned on five hits, and they committed two errors. Newton had four hits, all singles, and committed three errors. No Cardinal had more than one hit, and the team’s two RBI were from Ian White and Jesse Miller. Dakota Winkleman pitched six innings and all six of the Huskies’ runs were attributed to him on four hits, three walks and three hit batters, and four strikeouts. The Newton baseball team is 13-18 and will host Des Moines Christian on Tuesday.
