The Newton baseball and softball teams return to Pella Monday to take on the Dutch in Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheaders. It’s the second trip to Pella for both squads since Friday when the Cardinal baseball team defeated Pella Christian 20-4, and the softball team beat the Eagles 2-1.
Newton’s baseball team is 5-3 on the season, and is currently third in the Little Hawkeye Conference with two wins and one loss. Pella is sixth in the conference at 0-3, but their overall record is 2-5. The Cardinals have a team batting average of .335 and an on-base percentage of .447. The team batting average for the Dutch is .248, and their on-base percentage is .408.
The Newton and Pella softball teams are tied for fourth in the conference, each with two conference wins and one loss. That’s also the Dutch’s overall record, while the Cardinal softball team is 3-2 overall. Pella was ranked #9 in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Class 4A Preseason Rankings. The team’s current batting average is .312 with an on-base percentage of .389. Newton’s team batting average is .331, and their on-base percentage is .393.
Both Newton versus Pella baseball and softball doubleheaders begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Pella, with the second softball game to be broadcast live on the KRLS2 and the KRLS3 streams.
