The Newton baseball and softball teams were swept in home doubleheaders by Dallas Center-Grimes on Wednesday, with the second baseball game broadcast live on 92.1 KRLS and the KRLS3 stream.
The Mustang baseball team beat the Cardinals by identical 14-2 scores. Game one went six innings and game two lasted five innings. Newton was held hitless in game one, but had a total of eight runners on base courtesy of six walks and two Dallas Center-Grimes errors. The Mustangs led 8-0 before the Cardinals scored consecutive runs in the 4th and 5th innings. Aaden Grim had an RBI and scored one run after getting on base with a walk, while Gabe Otto was on base twice via a walk and error, and scored Newton’s other run. In game two, the Cardinals had three hits with an RBI by Lane Rozendaal. The two runs were scored by Drew Bauer, who was on base with a walk, and Landry Rausch, who scored after getting a hit. The Newton baseball team is now 6-12 in the conference and 12-15 overall, and will play on Friday at the Brent Prange Classic in Ankeny and Saydel.
The Newton softball team lost to #4 Dallas Center-Grimes 12-0 in four innings and 12-2 in five innings. The Cardinals were hitless in game one and had two base runners. Mack Sims got on base with a walk while Ava Williams was hit by a pitch. Newton committed three errors in game one and six errors in game two. Five Cardinal batters combined for seven hits in the second game, with Sims and Sloan Broderson each collecting two hits. Broderson and Leileigh Hammons accounted for Newton’s two RBI. The Cardinal softball team is 8-10 in conference games and 15-11 overall, and will host Des Moines East for a doubleheader on Friday.
