The Newton baseball team was shut-out 3-0 at home Tuesday in their regular season finale against Des Moines Christian. The Cardinals gave up two runs in the third inning and one run in the fifth inning to the Lions, who are now 24-8.
Newton’s best chance to score was in the first inning, when the Cardinals left the bases loaded. Drew Bauer walked with one out and stole second. He went to third on a base hit by Lane Rozendaal. Aaden Grimm then walked, moving Rozendaal to second. But then Mason Mendez struck out, and Landry Rausch hit a short fly ball for the third out. The Cardinals also had runners on second and third with no outs in the third inning, but the next three batters all struck out. For the game, Newton batters struck out seven times while the Cardinals’ four pitchers struck out nine Lions. Newton had two hits in the game along with five walks, one hit batter, and one batter reached on an error. Des Moines Christian had eight hits, two hit batters, and benefited from two Cardinal errors that allowed one unearned run.
The 13-18 Newton baseball team opens post season play in Saydel at 7 p.m. Friday playing the 22-9 Eagles in a Class 3A Substate 6 First Round game.
