The Newton girls golf team finished sixth at the Second Little Hawkeye Conference Meet in Indianola on Wednesday while the Cardinal boys tennis team played in Pella and lost to the Dutch and Waverly-Shellrock.
The Newton girls golf team shot a 450 on the Indianola Golf Club Course. Norwalk won the meet with a score of 347. The Cardinals top golfer among the 36 meet participants was Addie Ratcliff, who placed 17th with a round of 101. Teeah Yoder shot a 112 for 25th. Sophia MaHarry finished with a 118, Brooklyn Sterling a 119, and Molly Meyer and Sloan Brodersen both shot 123. Those Newton golfers placed 31st, and 33rd through 35th. Today at 10 a.m., the Cardinals’ girls golf team will compete against players from twelve other schools at the Linda Bloom Girls Golf Invite at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.
The Newton boys tennis team failed to win a match in Pella, falling to the Dutch 11-0 and Waverly-Shellrock 9-0. Against Pella, the Cardinals’ #4 and #5 singles players forced three sets. Noah Tremel lost the deciding third set 6-10 while Keegan Bretthauer suffered a 9-11 loss. Against Waverly-Shellrock, Bretthauer was the only Newton player to avoid a straight set loss, falling in the third set 8-10. The Newton boys tennis team plays at Dallas Center-Grimes at 4:15 p.m. today.
