Iowa’s Finance and Economic Development Authority Director has been in Newton a couple of times recently, and is impressed with how the community invests in itself. Speaking at Thursday’s Newton Rail Park Site Certification Ceremony, Debi Durham said quality of life is one of the smartest economic development investments a community can make.
“I was reminded of that when I stopped at the Grey Moon Public Market last week. What a wonderful space. It’s a beautiful example of taking a historic abandoned building and giving it a whole new purpose, creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs in a place where people want to gather.”
Durham also mentioned the transformation of the former Maytag campus into apartments, spaces for businesses, and Legacy Plaza.
“I even joined the younger members of your community at the splash pad when I was here. The same momentum is evident at Iowa Speedway, where NASCAR will return in just a few weeks.”
Although Newton has seen its share of changes and challenges, Durham says the community always comes together and gets to work. And with the Newton Rail Park State Site Certification, the Iowa Economic Development Authority Director says the city is preparing for opportunities.
