For the second year in a row, the Newton softball team defeated Fort Madison at Bob Pearl Field in Iowa City on Tuesday night in a game that was broadcast live on the KRLS3 stream.
The Cardinals won 10-1 in five innings, while last season it was a 7-6 Newton win. The Cardinals only sent three batters to the plate in the top of the first inning Tuesday, but the offense got going after that. Newton scored one run in the second inning, three in the third, four in the fourth, and two in the fifth. The Bloodhounds got their run in the bottom of the third.
Several Cardinal players had significant contributions to the win. Mack Sims hit an inside the park home run and a triple. Lexi Frehse had two RBI, and RBIs also came from Nora Davis, Sloan Broderson, and Leileigh Hammons. Hammons also picked up her 100th strikeout of the season, along with her 15th win against six losses.
The 19-11 Newton softball team will host Chariton for Senior Night on Thursday.
