The countdown of the Top 10 sports moments from Newton High School during the 2025-2026 school year is at #7 today, with Newton Junior Kent Montgomery finishing sixth at the 2026 Iowa High School Boys State Wrestling Championships. The event was held February 18 to February 21, 2026, at the Casey’s Center in Des Moines. Montgomery wrestled at 120-pounds in Class 3A, and earned the first state podium finish of his career. It was also the first state podium appearance for a Newton boys wrestler since 2022. Montgomery feels like he should be back on that podium again next year.
“Through all the work that I’ve put in, I have been wrestling for 11 or 12 years, and at this point, it’s kind of an expectation. I need to be up there with all these years under my belt.”
Montgomery was ranked #10 in his weight class entering the 3A tournament, and picked up three wins. He ended the season with a loss in the 5th place match, putting his overall record at 40-8.
