The Pella Christian baseball team’s season came to a close Tuesday night in the Class 2A Substate 5 Quarterfinals, falling 10-0 to Central Lee in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Eagles hung tough with the Hawks early in the contest, but couldn’t get the offense going to keep pace with the second-seeded team in the district. Following a scoreless first inning, Central Lee plated a run in the bottom of the second to open the scoring, then added two runs in each of the third and fourth innings to build up a 5-0 lead. The Hawks tacked on another run in the fifth inning to make it a 6-0 advantage, before scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game early via the run-rule. Pella Christian’s best scoring chances came in the third and fourth innings, getting two runners on base with two outs in both frames, but both opportunities yielded no runs.
Blake Gallaher had the lone hit for the Eagles in the contest, while Lewis Menninga reached base twice with a pair of walks. Logan Gallaher also got on base with a hit by pitch, and Dean De Ronde added a walk. Karson Harrill suffered the loss for Pella Christian on the mound, allowing three earned runs on seven hits across 3.2 innings.
The Eagles finish the season with a 4-29 overall record, and four seniors depart the program in Ben Van Wyngarden, Garrett Wielard, Logan Gallaher, and Toby Belzer.
