The Class 3A #15 Pella Christian softball team cruised to a 9-1 run-rule victory over Sigourney heard live on 92.1 KRLS Wednesday night, while the baseball team closed out regular season play with a 21-2 loss to West Marshall.
In their final home game of the regular season, the Eagles softball team opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Savages knotted the game back up at 1-1 in the top of the second, but Pella Christian responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame and three runs in the third to pull away for the win. The Eagles recorded 14 hits as a team to improve to 13-10 overall on the summer, led by 3-3 efforts from both Brynn Roozeboom and Alaina Herdegen. Roozeboom also had four RBIs and a double, while Herdegen had two runs scored and a two-run homer to left field in the third inning. Rachel Kacmarynski, Chloe Snyder, and Libbie Johnston each added two hits on the night, while scoring a combined four of the nine runs. Laurel Roozeboom picked up her tenth win of the season in the circle, throwing just 46 pitches in five innings to strike out one and allow just one run on two hits.
On the baseball diamond, Pella Christian fell behind early and couldn’t keep pace with West Marshall. The Trojans scored 12 runs in the opening two innings, then added the final nine runs in their final two innings at the plate. The Eagles plated their two runs in the bottom of the fourth, when an errant throw on an attempted double play sailed over the first baseman’s head and allowed Ben Van Wyngarden and Garrett Wielard to score. Van Wyngarden, Wielard, and Lewis Menninga were the lone baserunners for Pella Christian on the night, with Ben and Garrett reaching via walks and Lewis getting on with a hit by pitch.
The Eagles softball team is back in action tonight for a ranked match up at Class 4A #12 Grinnell at 7 pm. The Pella Christian baseball team closes out the regular season with a 3-28 overall record, and they will begin Class 2A Substate 5 play on Friday with a 7 pm game at Davis County that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
