Eagles Girls Soccer Advances to Regional Semifinal with Victory over Albia
The Pella Christian girls soccer team began Class 1A Region Five play Thursday night, picking up a 2-0 victory over Albia in the Quarterfinals.
The Eagles wasted little time grabbing the advantage in the contest, as Lexi Terpstra found the back of the net in the seventh minute of the game on an assist from Julia Van Zee. Pella Christian added onto the lead just before halftime, as Maggie Vos’ free kick deflected off the top of the goal and Chloe Vos deflected the ball to Tori Van Zee, and Van Zee beat the goalkeeper in the 38th minute. The Eagles continued to have chances to add to their lead after halftime, but were unable to convert on those opportunities while improving to 9-7-1 overall on the year.
Pella Christian next travels to Des Moines Christian for the Regional Semifinals on Tuesday at 7 pm.
Pella Christian Cruises to Four Inning Softball Win at Clarke
The Eagles softball team needed just four innings Thursday night for their first victory of the summer, cruising to 11-0 run-rule win at Clarke.
Pella Christian grabbed the advantage three batters into the game, as Laurel Roozeboom singled and courtesy runner Olivia De Haan scored on a Chloe Snyder single. After a scoreless second inning, the Eagles added five runs in the third inning and another five runs in the fourth to secure the win. Pella Christian recorded 14 hits as a team on the night, with Chloe leading the way with three hits and three RBIs. Rachel Kacmarynski, Laurel and Brynn Roozeboom, and Libby Johnston all had two hits apiece on the night. Maddy Van Zee added three RBIs, while Laurel and Finley Snyder each had two RBIs. Laurel also struck out four in recording the win in the circle, allowing just one hit and one walk in a complete game effort.
The Eagles are now 1-1 overall on the year, and they will play their third game in as many days tonight at home against Newton at 7:15 pm.
Eagles Baseball Squad Falls Late at Clarke
Despite outhitting Clarke Thursday Night, the Pella Christian baseball team came away on the wrong side of a walk-off in a 3-2 loss.
Competing in their third game in three days, the Eagles fell behind 2-0 after five innings, but rallied in the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, Garrett Wielard doubled to center field, before Logan Gallaher doubled to right field to score Wielard and pull Pella Christian within 2-1. Gallaher then tied the game three at-bats later, when a throwing error by the catcher brought him home to tie the game. Clarke battled back in the bottom of the seventh to score a run and drop the Eagles to 1-5 overall on the year. Pella Christian had eight hits on the night to the Indians’ three, with Garrett Wielard leading the way with a 3-3 effort. Blake Gallaher got the start on the mound, striking out six while taking a no-decision after allowing just one earned run on three hits and three walks. Logan Gallaher suffered the loss in relief, allowing just one walk and one unearned run.
The Eagles will look to bounce back tonight in their fourth game in as many days, hosting Newton in a 7 pm contest that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
