The Pella baseball team finished off a season sweep in the Tulip City Showdown Monday night, knocking off Pella Christian 7-2 and 7-5 in a pair of games heard live on the KRLS2 stream and on Pella Dutch Live.
In the resumption of the second game from the June 5th doubleheader, the Dutch opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. The Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead, but Pella plated three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to secure the victory. In the nightcap, Pella Christian grabbed the early advantage with two runs in the top of the first, but the Dutch answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Pella extended the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the second inning, but the Eagles scored a run in the top of the third to make it 6-3. The Dutch added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-3 advantage. Pella Christian tried to mount a late rally, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth and putting the tying run on first base in the top of the seventh, but Pella ended the threat to secure the sweep.
Colt Koeppen led the way for the Dutch in the two victories, going a combined 4-7 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs, a triple, and two stolen bases, while also striking out six in recording a complete game win on the mound in game one. Teagan Hoekstra spearheaded the Pella offense in game one, going 2-3 with three runs, two stolen bases, and a walk. Logan Gallaher went 2-3 with a run scored to lead the Eagles offense in the game one loss, while Dean De Ronde added a 2-4 effort with two runs scored in the nightcap.
Pella improved to 8-15 overall and 6-11 in Little Hawkeye Conference play, while Pella Christian fell to 3-22 overall and 1-13 in conference action. The Eagles are back on the road tonight to take on Class 2A #1 Pleasantville at 7 pm, while the Dutch are off until hosting Fairfield for their senior night doubleheader on Wednesday at 5 pm.
