It was a good night for the home team Saturday, as both the Central men’s and women’s basketball teams notched a win over visiting Bethany Lutheran. The Central women had the easiest time, getting out to a 38 – 22 lead at the half, and using that momentum and strong bench play to propel them to a 78 – 48 thrashing of the Vikings. Bry Pierce came off the bench and scored 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Nicole Strasko also added 11 points, as the team as a whole shot 50 percent from the field for the game, while the Dutch’s defense held Bethany Lutheran to a chilly 27 percent. On the men’s side of things, it seemed at times they would have almost the same difficulty or lack thereof against the Vikings, jumping out to a 7 – 0 lead and having a 14 point lead at several points in the second half. However, Bethany Lutheran would crawl back late to within one with under ten seconds to play, until clutch free throw shooting sealed a 79 – 77 victory for the Dutch men. Matt Greenfield had a career night, scoring 33 points on 13-of-20 shooting. The women move to 5 – 3 on the year, and the men improve to 6 – 3, and each team will face separate foes after finals this week; the men travel to Minnesota to face Martin Luther on Friday, while the women will stick around Pella to finish out the 2012 schedule, first facing Augustana this Saturday.
